It has been alleged that a mentally ill youth was brutally beaten to death in the Dhaka University campus. The accused in this incident are a group of students of Dhaka University. The deceased’s name is Tofazzal Hossain.
What happened to Tofazzal that day?
“He seems to have been beaten the most in the guest room,” said one student. Tofazzal has been subjected to repeated ‘questioning’ and physical abuse. A student of Dhaka University who witnessed the incident while passing by the guest room said this. But he did not have the courage to interfere. He saw from a distance that Tofajjal was brutally beaten by a group of people on suspicion of being a thief.

On Wednesday, Tofazzal entered Dhaka University campus in search of food. The students took him to the canteen and fed him well. Tofazzal, a resident of Kanthaltali Union in Patharghata of Barguna district, felt happy after eating. However, then which is a tremendous beating.
Several students of the university said Tofazzal died on Wednesday night after several hours of repeated physical abuse. They noted that his leg was injured and his body was bleeding.
According to Kalbela News, a student said the youth was taken to the hall’s “extension room” on suspicion of theft, where the beating intensified. The student said that those who assaulted Tofazzal are all from the hall.
He further added, “Many people questioned him suspecting him to be a thief. One person’s mobile phone is missing, and although Tofazzal denies theft, he claims he can identify the thief. Based on this everyone assumed that Tofazzal was the one. Tofazzal was still alive when a gang member brought him to the canteen and beat him up again. He was later declared brought dead at the Medical College Hospital.
Another student noted, “Though repeatedly beaten, Tofazzal kept trying to explain that he was not a thief and just wanted some food.” The student also said that after hearing this, he took Tofazzal to the canteen and gave him rice and curry. But after eating, he was taken to the guest room, where they stripped him, tied his feet and eyes, and beat him again. His leg was visibly injured and his body was bleeding. Another student confirmed that Tofajjal was taken to the canteen to eat but there were injuries on his body.
Six people have been arrested in connection with Tofajjal’s murder, and they have confessed to the crime in court. Meanwhile, Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, “A committee has been formed to investigate the murder. Based on their recommendation, eight students have been provisionally suspended.”
